Rural Destinations : Rishyap or Rishop

Rishyap unique feature is that there is only empty space between this tiny hamlet and the Kangchendzonga Range, standing at majestic attention on the horizon. And because the town is spread across such a narrow ridge, with valleys falling away on either side, the peaks can be seen from most of the hotels. You either decide to become energetic and take walks to the village after lunch, or you laze around nursing a cup of hot drink till the evening comes alive with dots of lights on the opposite hillside. Most hoteliers will kindle a fire around which you can huddle.

Rishyap can be reached either by vehicle or on foot. About 7 kms from Lava towards Kalimpong, you will have to take a right turn and drive about 5 kms to reach Rishyap. The last few kilometres of road is mostly not in great shape and smaller vehicles may have difficulty negotiating the steep curves, hence larger vehicles are recommended. The other option is to walk to Rishyap from Lava, if you are not carrying too many luggage and wont mind walking for 5 kms, you may ask locals at Lava for the route and enjoy a nice stroll through forests. Over the years a number of tourist accommodations have come up at Rishyap. Almost all of the tourist accommodation are village homestay type and can not be compared with hotels in major towns. Basic facilities are available at the place with running water, attached bath and descent food.
